Microsoft Word documents can be viewed through the use of either Microsoft Word or the free Microsoft Word Viewer. If your browser is configured properly, documents with the suffix ".doc" will be recognized as Word files and the viewer software will launch automatically. Downloading Word Document There are two steps when downloading Word document files. 1. Download the file to your computer, or open the file directly from the website. 2. Open the file with Word. Step 1 - Download the Document File Word files are handled differently depending on what type of 'browser' you are using. A browser is a program used to view web pages. The two most common types of browsers are: 1. Internet Explorer 2. Netscape 1a - Using Internet Explorer To download a Word file using Internet Explorer: • Click on the link of the document file you want to download. Right-click on the Name of the desired word document. From the drop menu, select Save Target As. A window will then open and you can save this document into a location on your machine where you want to save the file. Select a location on your machine where you want to save the file by clicking on the down-arrow next to the 'Save in:' field. • Note the name of the file and the location you are saving the file to. • Click on 'Save'. Mac Users Position the cursor on the file you wish to download, and hold the mouse button down. From the drop menu, select Download Link To Disk. A window will then open and you can save this file on your machine 1b - Using Netscape To download a file using Netscape: • Right-click on the document link. From the drop menu, select Save Link As. From the drop menu, select Save This Link As. A window will then open and you can select a location on your machine where you want to save the file. Mac Users Position the cursor on the file you wish to download, and hold the mouse button down. From the drop menu, select Download Link To Disk. A window will then open and you can save this file on your machine. Step 2 - Open the File with Microsoft Word Once you have downloaded the file, locate where you saved it and either open the file in Word, or by using Windows Explorer. To open the file in Word select the 'File' menu and select 'Open'. Then locate where the document file was downloaded to, select the file and click 'Open'. When using Windows Explorer, find the location where the document file was download to and then double click on the file itself to open it in Word. Mac Users Double click on the Word icon or drag and drop the file onto the Word application. |
